Côte d’Ivoire : The return of the elephant ?

La version intégrale en anglais du numéro double spécial Côte d’Ivoire d’Afrique contemporaine vient de paraître.

Côte d’Ivoire : The return of the elephant ? With this title, this new double issue of Afrique contemporaine aims to provide a picture of the current transformations underway in Côte d’Ivoire, less than two years ahead of the next presidential elections. Is the country on the path to emergence, or is it just experiencing economic recovery ? Is it heading toward reconciliation, or toward political fragmentation following the lost decade of the early 2000s and the post-electoral crisis of 2010–2011 ? Can we and should we view Côte d’Ivoire solely through the lens of its capital, Abidjan, or instead attempt to grasp the diverse situations within the country by focusing on local developments, on culture, and on religion ? Do young people genuinely have a future in this country where the political class makes so little room for newcomers ?
This collection of reflections and analyses does not attempt to impose any particular viewpoint or vision of Côte d’Ivoire’s past or present in-the-making. It instead endeavours to map out the range of overlapping and conflicting short-term and long-term possibilities that build what Marie Miran-Guyon, the coordinator of this special issue, neatly terms ‘the symphony of temporalities’.
